| Playing with your puppy |
Play is a vital part of growing up, bonding you and your puppy. Avoid accidents while out playing and protect him with a pet insurance policy.
Set some rules
Play is an opportunity to teach your dog to
stick to the rules and accept you as the pack leader. Make sure he doesn't win
all the games and only give toys when you are ready, not when he demands them.
Hide and seek is a puppy favourite, while fetch games will give him a chance to
stretch his legs. Avoid using sticks that can easily damage his mouth. A puppy
also has to learn to amuse himself, so provide him with some toys - otherwise
he might be tempted to play with something unsuitable like your shoes.
Socialisation
Before you can
take him to the park to play, your puppy will need to be used to different
people, noises and smells outside the home. This is a process known as
socialisation. Introduce new sights and sounds gradually so he doesn't become
overwhelmed. He also needs to get used to other dogs,
so if you have the opportunity take him to a 'puppy party' which many vet
practices hold.
Top
toys
Go for specialist dog toys that are
non-toxic. Children's toys are often unsuitable. Balls and Frisbees are firm favourites, make sure they are durable and large enough so
they can't be swallowed. Chews are a great idea, particularly while they are
teething.
