Start early with your puppy, so he can master the basic skills before he goes for his first walk. Ask about 'puppy parties' at your vets and pick up a pet insurance leaflet.
Mastering the basics
Start training when your puppy is around
eight weeks old. Your puppy should understand the basic commands - sit and
stay. He should also be able to walk on a lead without pulling. Another vital
skill is learning to return to you when you call.
The key to teaching is to be patient and repeat the action until he understands. Take a puppy to a training class, professional help is always handy and he'll get to meet other dogs.
Socialisation
Dogs are pack animals and need the company of
people as well as other dogs.Socialisation requires you to introduce him
gradually to all the noises and sounds he's going to encounter when he's out
and about. Don't overwhelm him with sights and sounds, as this could make him
timid.
Once he's had his vaccinations, it's a good idea to take him along to puppy
party which many vet practices now hold.
