| Choosing the right kennels |
Occasionally you'll need to be apart from your dog and choosing the right kennel is important. Remember to let your kennel have any relevant pet insurance details.
Ask around
Word of mouth is probably the best form of
recommendation, so ask friends or the local vet to recommend a kennel. Some councils will also hold lists of approved kennels in their
area.
Inspect
Draw up a short list and visit them. A good kennel should be happy to show you
round and answer questions about the facilities and daily routine. Look out for
heating, cleanliness, exercise areas and above all look at the customers - if
the dogs look content it's probably a well-run establishment.
Check the rules
Each kennel will have it own set of rules.
Some will be happy for you to bring your dog's bedding and toys. Also ask about
vaccinations, you should insist that fellow guests are fully protected.
Petsitters
Some dogs just don't cope well outside the
home environment. So consider alternatives such as asking a relative or friend
to dog sit. There are also professional petsitters who will look after your dog at home for a fee. Contact the National
Association of Registered Petsitters (NARP) for petsitters near you or try your Yellow Pages
