Keeping his mouth and teeth clean is an essential part of a dog owner's responsibilities. Your vet will check this area as a routine part of the examination. Pet insurance should cover you if any treatment is required.

Canine teeth
The first needle-like teeth will be replaced with adult teeth by the time your puppy is seven months old. A teeth cleaning routine should be set early, try to do this at least three times a week. Use a soft brush, special canine toothpaste and gentle circular motions - avoid scrubbing.

As your pet gets older, look out for potential problems such a bleeding gums. This is a sign of the build up of bacteria and plaque. If this becomes a serious problem, your vet can scale and polish the teeth under general anesthetic. Teeth can also become damaged through chewing unsuitable hard objects, so keep an eye out.

Inherited conditions
Some breeds are prone to inherited conditions which lead to a misalignment of the jaws. Unless Pet Insurance Quote this is causing discomfort or interferes with feeding it's best left alone. However, check with the vet they might consider surgery is necessary. In some cases adult teeth may be blocked from coming through. This can be remedied through surgery.
