Spraying is a natural function of many animals, designed to mark out their territory. The urge to do this can be reduced by neutering. Elective procedures like neutering are not covered by pet insurance policies.

• Owners need to distinguish between urinating and spraying. A cat sprays by standing up and facing away from the area being marked.
• All cats spray, it’s just the un-neutered male cat’s urine has a particularly strong and unpleasant aroma. A neutered male will continue spraying, but not indoors.
• Spray can be removed using a non-ammonia based cleaner.
• Spraying can also be the sign of an over anxious cat, so settle him down by keeping him indoors for a few days and locking his cat flap.
