Dental care
Avoid potential problems by maintaining a
healthy oral regime and take out a pet insurance policy to protect you should
the worst occur.
Teeth
Adult dogs have 42 teeth, which they keep
clean naturally by chewing bones. But as most dogs in the UK eat pre-prepared
non-abrasive foods they need some help. Add crunchy biscuits to their diet or
provide dental chews.
Regular checks and brushing
Regular brushing with a soft human toothbrush
or a special canine one should prevent most potential
problems. Use circular
gentle motions with canine toothpaste and avoid scrubbing hard. Check you dog's
mouth at least once a week. Look out for signs of inflammation, redness,
chipping of teeth or build up of plaque. Take him to the vets if you spot any
of these symptoms. In the worst cases the vet can perform a scale and polish
under general anesthetic.
