The toxocara worm (a parasite, whose eggs live in cat faeces) can lead to a condition called toxocariasis, which can cause blindness in humans. So empty litter trays regularly and wear gloves as well as washing your hands.

Identification
Your kitten should have some form of permanent identification, such a microchip. The chip number is held on a database with your contact details. If she strays these can be found using a scanner.

Basic care

In or out
Lots of cats live indoors, but most like a cat-flap that lets them come and go. Just be careful if you live near a busy road.
